The day dawned dull, grey and cold and notions that our AGM might also provide an excuse for a family day out, with a barbecue and beach for the kids to play on had evaporated by the time the first mug of tea was consumed. Thankfully, our foresighted outgoing Chairman, Dr. Charles Wong, had arranged a room for our exclusive use, so we were warm and comfortable. About 20 of our members were able to attend, and we were particularly pleased to see three of our past Scholars (Bonnie Chiu, Raymond Yuen and Josie Ng). It was also a special pleasure to welcome Penny and Alan Smith. Penny was Chairwoman of the Hong Kong Branch for a number of years and both Penny and Alan have been generous donors to our Scholarship Fund.

Professor Eric Thomas, Vice Chancellor of The University of Bristol, visited Hong Kong on 19th October 2009 during his world  tour  undertaken as part of the university's centenary celebrations.

The day dawned bright and sunny (or at least it had attained bright sunnyness by the time I was awake to notice). This was a stroke of luck as global warming, El Nino or similar have been playing havoc with our almost guaranteed fine weather in October and November and the previous week had been overcast and distinctly damp. It mattered because we had decided to hold our AGM in the open air on the grass next to the swimming pool at the USRC - doing anything on grass in Hong Kong is a rare treat which we hoped would attract a decent turn out of our membership for the AGM. It also allowed the inclusion of family members for what we anticipated would be an enjoyable and informal occasion once we got the business out of the way. Indeed, we are indebted to our Chairman, Dr. Charles Wong, for both the venue and what made the event very special, his chamber group of Musical Medics who accompanied the lunch and entertained us for several hours with a selection of pieces ranging from Western classical to traditional Chinese. Charlie joined them, along with his double bass. The 30 or more of us who were there greatly appreciated both their musical accomplishments and their willingness to give up their time on a Sunday to serenade us. The gathering broke up around 4pm sharing a general consensus that as AGMs go, it had been pretty damn good.
